President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has paid attention to see the possibility of collecting personal data such as national identity cards, driving licences, immigration and emigration documents, registration of births and deaths under one entity.

During a discussion held today at the Presidential Secretariat with officials of the Information and Communication Technology Ministry, he said such a move would be instrumental in reducing time, effort and money spent on such services.

“The existing practice is to gather same information by different entities. If this could be brought under one umbrella organisation, it will reduce delays and ensure efficiency thus preventing duplication and circulation of erroneous data. The inter-connectivity among ministries, departments and semi-governmental organisations is vital to the national development process. A high-level of productivity could be achieved by networking and streamlining relevant organisations,” he said.

In a statement, the President’s Media Division said the attention of the President was drawn to assigning some of the projects -- currently under the purview of the Information and Communication Technology Ministry -- to ministries or institutions directly responsible for the outcome of the programme.

He cited as an example, the handing over of the school computer laboratory project to the Education Ministry.

Minister Bandula Gunawardana, State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, ministry secretaries including Chulananda Perera and Professor Sunanda Mahendra along with several other officials participated in the discussion. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

This is normal with todays technology. Should have been do long ago. The danger is privacy and hacking. Even mature platforms are hacked and comes at a cost.

Good idea. Does not come cheap. Today we live in a cloud and not difficult to integrate. We call these data lakes.

Data integration is no easy task when there are data silos having different architecture. Even with large telecom/ IT organisations there are silos. They can be integrated at a large cost. Can Sri Lanka afford it?

This is great initiative. People should be able to apply /. renew passports, driving licenses etc online using personal data logging on to a government agency such as Passport office of DMT, then visiting a post office ( one out of chosen range of post offices) to Hanover online filled printed application. Saving manpower and saving time. Most importantly no hassle!!!

Those who enthusiastically elected him as the President should celebrate that all their personal details are going to be stored up . This is called “democracy “ Rajapaksas style.

Who's child is this? All over the world, government posses your details and even now the government has it. It is about centralizing.

In developed country even medical records are stored. So doctors can access when ever it is needed. It helps a lot to treat patients promptly. Yes, people should celebrate of this move.

All comments given looks negative as if Srilankan pundits know every damn thing. If it was carried out in another part of the globe they praise and give examples to others.Pathetic!!!

Ranjan Perera Tuesday, 31 December 2019 08:55 PM

Fully agreed with Ajja. Many people writing to this column have a typical negative mindset. Centralized data for the government is a necessity. These negative people do not mind when Google , Facebook collect all their personal information. Law abiding people should not be afraid of this move. Only criminals will be affected badly.

this centralized data can also be used individual citizen's freedom because this data can be used those who are involved in extrajudicial crimes
