Due to higher rainfall received in the upper catchment areas of the Kelani River Basin, a flood alert in low lying areas was issued, the Irrigation Department said.
They said low lying areas of Kelani River Valley situated in Dehiovita, Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa and Wattala D/S Divisions had been alerted of a possible flood threat.
According to the analysis on experienced rainfall and current water levels of river gauges in Kelani River, the water level at Hanwella and the Nagalagam Street could be increased up to 6.60 ft within the next 6 to 16 hours.
The residents of the area and drivers of the vehicles running through those areas are requested to pay high attention in this regard to save valuable lives and public and private properties.
The Disaster Management Authorities and District/ Divisional Administrations are requested to take necessary precautions in this regard. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
