The cause for the accident which had taken place on the Southern Expressway this morning resulted in excessive speed and lack of attention by the driver on to the road ahead, the police said.

The police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the accident took place at the 30.1 km post between Gelanigama and Dodangoda at 11.45 am.

It is learnt that eight vehicles that were going towards Galle from Colombo were involved in the accident.

As a result of this, the police spokesman requested the general public, especially the drives who are using the expressway should be extra vigilant when driving and prevent such accidents.

The police will take stern action against those who violate the traffic rules and regulations.

The road has been cleared of all debris and opened for vehicular traffic. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

One can also see vehicles in the left lane to be very slow enjoying the scenery, sun rise and sun set. They are a nuisance to the vehicles following them.

This is the result of police complacence. If drivers are punished according to the law, this type of "accident" can be prevented. Instead, they are allowed to getaway by paying a bribe.

Recent indiscipline riders who were travelled E01,half of the body out of the vehicle, while sitting on door, should offer the maximum punishment,in order to avoid indiscipline in expressways

The title on this article is "Overspeeding, carefree driving caused E’way mishap: Police". Speeding has a different meaning. On the other hand, overspeeding has a different meaning. This is a misleading title.

" Police spokesman requested the general public, especially the drives who are using the expressway should be extra vigilant when driving and prevent such accidents." What a stupid request is that ? Don't we all want to avoid accidents by all means ? Again I repeat, these drivers do not understand the correct driving habits or the rule of the roads.

They were driving it like they are in colombo traffic, but at high speeds. New year hunger games. We saw way more than 8cars damaged by 2PM. More like 40 odd cars.

CNW PATHIRANA Thursday, 15 April 2021 08:30 AM

I use this route very often and do not see Police controlling vehicle behaviour unlike earlier. Many drivers do not have an idea about lane rule in Highways and even come very close at high speeds thats is crazy.

    Ranaweera Thursday, 15 April 2021 08:31 AM

Main causes are selfish and stupid driving.

    BuffaloaCitizen Thursday, 15 April 2021 08:55 AM

So simply said, the Police spokesperson denies the police are not responsible for any of these accidents

    Jude Thursday, 15 April 2021 09:21 AM

I reiterate, make drivers undergo mandatory test in Expressway driving and print a Driver's handbook!! then develop visual computer test about safe driving in Expressways etc.!!!

Hiran Fernando Thursday, 15 April 2021 10:04 AM

Inexperienced drivers, no common sense to maintain a safe trailing distance Most of the drivers are unaware of stopping distances that are required for a given speed Responsibility is up to the driver not the Police. Hiran

One other Main cause is driving on the right lane at a slow speed Without allowing vehicles to over which is there to over take the vehicle moving on the left lane. Highway also should have a minimum speed limit on the left lane as some are driving On the left lane driving like Going for a picnic scenery tour even if you indicate they do not bother

First thoroughly train the drivers and make them sit an examination on highway driving. Most are issued a driving license in exchange for cash!
