Three Opposition MPs in a letter addressed to Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya have requested him to postpone the date for calling nominations and the holding of the general elections considering the chaos caused by COVID- 19.
MPs Mujibur Rahaman, Kavinda Jayawardena and Imran Mahaoof have made the request from the polls chief.
"The government has already taken steps and imposed new laws for transportation and other sectors. You have also mentioned that it is not advisable to hold rallies at this time of crisis. You as the chairman of Elections Commission is duty-bound to take some action just like the government. Therefore we earnestly appeal to you to postpone the nominations and the date of elections" the MPs said in their letter. (Yohan Perera)
