While condemning the media reports circulating on social media and news websites, the Vehicle Importers Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL) and the Vehicle Importers Association of Lanka (VIAL) said there was no agreement with the Government on obtaining permission to import vehicles under a quota system.

VIASL President S.K. Gamage told the Daily Mirror that a news item is circulating these days claiming that the government and vehicle importers have reached an agreement to re-import vehicles under a specific quota.

He said there was a meeting with President's Secretary P.B. Jayasundera at the Presidential Secretariat today, but we did not discuss about such  quota system to resume vehicle imports.

While considering the current economic situation and as a responsible vehicle import Association in the country, we never thought of appealing to the Government to grant such permissions for vehicle imports, Mr. Gamage said.

Therefore, both Associations thought of issuing a joint announcement denying the media reports. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

We have $4.8 b in our foreign reserve and have to settle a debt of $3.0. IMF not giving loans due to conditions that we have failed. If all of the above news are not fake news, we are doing remarkably good where our economy is concern.

you sound like trump. Reserve position is required not only to pay the loans. there are more commitments on to it. Once the loan is paid we would not have USD for not even 2 weeks of imports, which is an indicator of BOP crisis. Now its time to brace ourselves for a sharp rupee depreciation.

Government should allow only foreign currency earners like exporters to import vehicles. This will automatically control balance of payment problem

This has gone two far. If politicians can use luxury vehicles worth 20 to 30 million thanks to tax payed by the ordinary people, why not allow them to buy a reconditioned vehicle for at least 3 to 4 million? Is this what the voters get in return for electing the current government?

why dont these two associations get together under one name? Until now they were fighting and cutting eachother at the neck. Now both are desperate and making joint statements. At least this govt has done some good by bringing all the protestors together. Otherwise they fight like cat and dog
