No Buddhist monk should be given nomination for the upcoming general election or any other election in the future, Mihintale Rajamaha Viharaya Chief Incumbent Walawahengunawewe Dhammaratana Thera said yesterday.

The Thera said he requested President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and leaders of other political parties not to appoint Buddhist monks to the parliament from the national list either.

The Thera told a news conference held at the Temple that President Rajapaksa was elected by the majority with the belief that he would protect the country, nationality and the religion and added, he expected that the President would carry out his duties in keeping the confidence. (Athula Bandara)

All will agree with you your honour. Clergy in all religions must be function only in advisory capacities.

I never thought that one of these degenerate men in Orange would make such a correct statement

Many moderate Buddhists will totally agree with the Venerale Monk. Monks should stay away from politics and work together with leaders of other religions to inculcate good values amongst citizens.

Well said monk. I am a Buddhist and the duty of the monk is to preach Dhamma to lay people and not to dabble in politics. Please take the cue from other religions.

Hindhu priests don't indulge in Politics. Cannot say for the other religions.

Can someone enlighten the readers as to why a religion requires 'protection', when the whole concept of spirituality is to do with the 'self' within or is it theocracy and not spirituality that the prelate is concerned about.

I raise my hat to this priest. this is something that should have been said a long time ago. Clergy of all religions should confine themselves to religious matters, not politics.

Gummay Baiyya Sunday, 24 November 2019 10:24 PM

We don't have Buddhist monks in Parliament. what we have are a few monkeys who have stolen and draped itself with robes.

jayaraj perera Monday, 25 November 2019 06:12 AM

Hope the current MP "annasiwaththe rathna" understands it.

    Terrence Monday, 25 November 2019 08:35 AM

You have spoken a mouthful of wisdom

    anoosh Monday, 25 November 2019 12:29 PM

    Rathne;s should resign.

Jayaseeli Christiansen Monday, 25 November 2019 12:37 PM

I am glad to hear at least just 1 Buddhist Priest spoken from the heart! This is the way to be! It was a big mistake to allow Buddhist monks to come to political stages and scream from the lungs with all kinds of filthy words! Buddhist monks duty is to preaching Buddhism and help people to have a better life, while providing advisers to the politicians doing the right thing to the country!
