The railway department will introduce a "Heritage Train" with wooden compartments to promote the tourism industry in the upcountry in the future, the Railways Chief Engineer Mechanical and Project Director Keerthi Hewavitharana said.
He said the project was initiated as a concept of the Railways General Manager.
This Super Luxury Train consisting of four wooden compartments will be assigned to travel between Ella and Kandy and will be available only for tourists, he said.
"The required wooden compartments are being constructed at the railway workshop in Ratmalana. The project of refurbishing of 200 abandoned railway compartments was started in 2017 by the Railways Department in collaboration with Tantri Trailers," Mr. Hewavitharana said.
At the yard, 200 compartments of the S8 Type and Rumanian types have been refurbished and 140 of them have already been added to the railway's train fleet. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

No money and back to the old coaches. Nice.

An excellent idea. But why discriminate? This is not in keeping with the laws of the country. Make this available for locals, too, even at a price.

Or else prohibit foreigners travelling third class on other trains.
