The National Transport Commission (NTC) would introduce another set of classical audio songs and high-quality music video CDs and DVDs to play in buses within the next two months, NTC Director-General commander (Rtd) Mr Nilan Miranda said.

"We cannot take legal action against bus operators for not playing the videos and audios given by the NTC. But this can be considered as a condition, during the renewal of the route permit," NTC Director-General said.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror he said the first set of songs were introduced and distributed among bus crews ceremonially at the Makumbura Multi-Modal Transport Hub.

Transport Minister Mahinda Amaraweera requested all bus crews to stop playing irritating music and videos from January 15.

"The decision was taken considering the repetition of songs in buses. The songs and videos would be selected under the supervision of a panel of experts," he said.

The Transport Ministry had prohibited loud music in buses from January 01, 2020, and had advised passengers to use the hotline 1955 to lodge any complaint regarding the matter. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Nothing more important to do. Transport is erratic and in disarray. Buses filthy and to large for our roads and overloaded. Selection of songs to be played are not important. Transport Ministry is lost on what priorities are. NTC does not have anything better to look into ? It appears there are square pegs appointed to man round holes.

Better put some bana in the bus.

Will the songs be Sinhalese, Tamil and English songs, or racist slanted Sinhala only songs?

It's not the quality of the music it's the volume. If people need music they can listen to their own at the volume they want, privately.

In my opinion NTC to release next set of songs, videos for public/private buses is of no use. The main issue here is playing audio LOUDER. These undisciplined drivers and conductors cannot be corrected and they will continue to play LOUDER music. NTC should take action to stop completely these set of songs, videos for buses in line with best practices adopted in other countries

Better to stop this completely. What about stopping louder horns and flashing lights by these moody drivers

I have tried so many times in contacting and reporting to hotline 1955 to lodge any complaint . It is of no use as they say they will look into this and no action taken by NTC. There are thousand cases where public is not interested in reporting as they know NTC is toothless regulator

There are NTC inspectors on the road side to check bus routes, uniforms, ticket issues etc etc. from buses. Many general public have seen and observed conductor goes to corrupt NTC inspectors with route permit and other document plus Rs. 100 note. Conductor comes to the bus within seconds. What a country of corruption?

There is no difference between TUK TUK drivers and bus drivers in Sri Lanka. NTC has to completely stop this nonsense of playing music completely
