The Railway Services State Minister C. B. Ratnayake yesterday said that the ministry had decided to suspend importing of railway compartments in the future. Speaking to the media following an inspection visit to the Maradana Railway yard, the minister said only the seats of the compartments would be imported in the first phase, at the initiating of the programme.
However, the technicians and engineers at the Maradana workshop yard were able to construct the required seats using local materials, he said.
A project proposal to build compartments locally had already been passed.
The Minister said that most of the old compartments were more than 25 years old.
“Our locally skilled workers of the Railways Department have proven that they have the technology and skills to repair these compartments,” he said.
He said the programme was initiated to repair 200 coaches and to complete the project within three years.
A total of 140 compartments had already been completed and were in service, the Minister added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Really? It is amazing! You have already completed 140 compartments within one and half months? That is 4 compartments a day? This is fantastic. At this rate we can export compartments even to India. We need ministers like you. So we will support you.

Some of the carriages imported from Rumania by the then GM Mr. Rampala are over 50 years old and still in service. The problems are the imported after 2010 from China and India. These were not suitable for our tracks. The carriages refurbished by Sri Lanka Railway are shabby using "Pakis" planks. The technology used in primitive. The reason for this decision is because the government has no money. Simple.

It is very good to have our own people make it . Give them a hand and recognize their skills. If there is anything that could be manufactured locally the why import, its for commission. We appreciate good decisions taken by the minister.

No money, no honey. They are planing to rehabilitate 50 years old railway carriages locally at the railway workshops. The will use the 50 years old bogies and suspension system. So we will ride on 50 year old comfort. The result of getting down junk since 2010.
