Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who stands for democracy will end up joining the right political camp one day, a Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP said today.
SJB Colombo District MP S. M. Marikkar told a press conference yesterday that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is leader who stands for democracy and he will end up in the correct political camp one day.
“As per the current political developments in the country, there will be two political camps. One would be the camp which welcome dictatorship, while the other which embraces democracy. Prime Minister Rajapaksa is a leader who stands for democracy whatever said and done. Therefore he will end up in the political camp which embraces democracy,” he Mr. Marikkar said.
Mr. Marikar said the government might try to woo some members from the opposition to support the proposed 20th Amendment to the constitution. “SLPP obtained only 145 seats at the recent general elections. Its allies such as EPDP obtained two seats while TMVP had got one. Accordingly, the ruling party does not enjoy a two thirds majority at the moment. Therefore it is likely that ruling party might be trying to woo some opposition members to support the 20th Amendment,” he said.
“The ruling party had obtained only a simple majority at the general elections, if one takes into account the number of voters who refrained from going to the polling stations. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa likewise failed to obtain 50% of the votes at the presidential elections, if one takes the number of voters who did not vote,” he added.(Yohan Perera)

Or a tactic to create rift between MR and Gota. But they will not fall into this trap again.
