Jaffna MC forms new Police unit with outfit similar to LTTE, taken into custody

Five uniforms belonging to the newly- established Police Unit by the Jaffna Municipal Council, which are similar to the LTTE police uniform, had been taken into custody by the Jaffna Police today.

Jaffna Mayor Visvalingam Manivannan said that a five-member Police unit has been established to protect the cleanliness of Jaffna.

The Mayor said the unit was established in order to take legal action against those who pollute the main streets of Jaffna, spit betel saliva on the road, litter the roads in numerous ways and those who do not follow health precautions.

It was reported that there are plans to impose a fine of Rs. 1000 to Rs. 5000 for unauthorized parking of vehicles.

According to the residents, the uniforms of the five-member Police unit were used during the war by the de facto LTTE police.

The Municipal Council officials have been instructed to report to the Jaffna Police Station to record statements regarding the establishment of the Police Unit and the role of the unit.

When the Daily Mirror contacted the Jaffna Police OIC, he said the police have opened a special probe into the incident. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya and Romesh Madushanka)

OMG, there are like the traffic wardens like that of Colombo Municipal Council. Legally not wrong. The usage of the word Police for the Tamil word, ‘Kaaval’ as Police was wrong. The major is a lawyer and the matter will go to court. Those who ordered the arrest, perhaps Sarah, should read about the laws of municipal councils!

The government is very jittery. It's not against the law to have law enforcement officers in a municipality. However there uniform should not be the same as the Sri Lankan police or armed forces.However if one is fined he can go to court for redress. The court is the final arbitrator not the local police force
