The proposed National Democratic Front (NDF) will be formed within the next few days while the issues pertaining to its candidate will also be resolved soon, UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa said yesterday.
Mr. Premadasa who was speaking to the journalists after a meeting of UNF Leaders at Temple Trees last evening said NDF will be formed within the next few days while the candidate will also be known around that time. However, he said he cannot give an exact date on which the alliance will be formed and the candidate would be announced.
Asked whether the UNF leaders expressed their support to him as the presidential candidate, Mr. Premadasa said everyone in the country will support him.
“We have no issues and there are no divisions among the UNP as everyone will get together to form the new alliance and choose the candidate,” he said.
Asked about the disciplinary inquiry which UNP had decided to carry out against two-state Ministers, he said issue is a trivial one and would be settled soon.
Minister Lakshman Kiriella who also talked to the media after the meeting said the alliance will be formed soon while other matters will also be resolved as soon as possible. Minister Mano Ganesan who is the leader of Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) said the alliance will be formed at the right time. “We don’t have to rush things and name a candidate just because the opposition had named their candidates,” he said.
Meanwhile, Daily Mirror also learns that an agreement was reached on the constitution of the alliance while UNP will have the opportunity of nominating someone for the General Secretary’s post. General Secretary of the alliance will have to work with the leadership council of the new alliance. It has been also decided that UNP will propose a neutral venue to choose and name the candidate. In another development, Minister Harin Fernando told Daily Mirror that neither him nor anyone else who are backing Mr. Premadasa wants to break up the party. “We only want to see that the candidate is chosen by the majority of UNP MPs and working committee. We have no intention of rebelling against the party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
