Many international and local taxi services are dominating the industry without paying a single rupee as tax to the Government, All-Island Three-Wheeler Drivers' Union (AITWDU) lamented.

AITWDU President Lalith Dharmasekera told the Daily Mirror that they had requested the Government to implement a system to regulate the service.

But the Government was not so keen to heed to their requests to check the background of those foreign companies before allowing to establish their service in the country," he said.

"We strove to implement many facilities for the people, but no one appreciated our effort. The facilities introduced by the International companies became highly popular among the local society even with the help of certain government officials," he said.

Therefore, the Association requests the Government to implement a system to protect the local three-wheeler taxi drivers and to regulate the service. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

    Dee Tuesday, 08 December 2020 06:18 AM

Because it is way more cheaper than using you junction pickpockets!

The Counsellor Tuesday, 08 December 2020 06:28 AM

Local taxis with or without meters charge an exorbitant amount when rides are hauled. Don't give this turd talks please. Uber and pickme see doing a great job and convenience to passengers.

    Jeeves Tuesday, 08 December 2020 06:28 AM

Why should foreign companies be exempted from paying tax; a much needed revenue? Let's not fall for the "we are providing jobs for locals" excuse!

    Leel Tuesday, 08 December 2020 06:38 AM

But this taxi hailing services are very helpful to ordinary people. First thing is it is cheaper than so call threewheel service. They come to you. You do not need to go to them.

Local operators wrought the system the way the deceive and dupe the tourists is a shame they need to be educated to how to treat and respect the tourists and the locals explain the cost to the countries image and revenue, come up with a educational course for this industry and give them a ticket of compliance if they want to be part of the industry and have some structure.

Pathetic sittuation. Every profitable venture systematically grabbed by either local or foreign companies with their sound financial back ground. What a horrific nature of the capitalistic phylosophy.

    DillonDP Tuesday, 08 December 2020 07:25 AM

That's cause you don't offer the service for the price charged .... Stop complaining

    Sokrates Tuesday, 08 December 2020 07:25 AM

Where is the problem? Even the drivers of the taxi companies are locals. And if they give a better service then the general public will benefit from it. All these unions are not good for the economy.

    VJ Tuesday, 08 December 2020 08:57 AM

They may not pay taxes but they are probably paying someone something.

    Amal Tuesday, 08 December 2020 09:38 AM

Indeed, since three wheelers are reliable tax payers.

Haioo Salli Tuesday, 08 December 2020 10:14 AM

Please give us a list of "facilities" that you "strove" to provide? Fixing mirrors to stare at girl's legs? Researching and fixing the worst lights INSIDE vehicles Fixing a HiFi system to ensure clients don't hear the outside noise.. And then not hearing anything after that

    Jude Tuesday, 08 December 2020 10:37 AM

Remember, Rule number 1 in customer service! If YOU DON'T TAKE care of YOUR customers , someone else will take care of them ! YEAH !!

Sebastian Vinoth Tuesday, 08 December 2020 10:53 AM

I have gone through all your comments. Let say you ,there are two leading taxi service providers. They charge 25% commission from drivers earnings ( every 100 rupees 25 rupees taxed from drivers). For a ride driver has to go around 5 km to pick up the rider, whereas he travel only 3km. These type of sacrifices driver have to bear in order to company make profit. Whereas this two ventures make very huge revenue and never pay back tax to Government
