A one-year-old infant had been bitten by a rabies-infected jackal last evening in the Horana area, the Police said.
The infant had been admitted to the Horana Base Hospital after the attack.
However, the villagers in the area had killed the jackal and handed over its head to the Medical Research Institute (MRI) to check if the animal was rabid.
Meanwhile, a senior official of the Sri Lanka Wildlife Health Centre (SLWHC) said the jackal had come into the house and bitten the infant.
“It was clear that the jackal is rabies-infected. Otherwise, the jackals never chase people and bite. It had been reported that the rabies menace was spreading towards the Pugoda area from Horana.
“Jackal attacks take place due to misunderstandings of their behaviour. Naturally, jackals use to run away if people spot them. But in this case, they seem to chase people and attack them. These jackals could be infected with rabies," an MRI official said.
The official requested people in the area to contact the Wildlife Department via hotline 1992 and 1991 to bring the situation under control.
He also requested the people not to walk alone on roads, not to send children to school alone and not to walk at night to prevent rabies-infected jackal attacks.
However, a dog vaccination programme is being conducted in the area.
Earlier, three incidents reported relating to the rabies-infected jackal attacks in the Millaniya area in Kalutara.
Following that the health officials had alerted the public of the danger and issued guidelines to guard themselves against such attacks. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Kill those jackals and save those innocent people. Don't listen to ngo animal rights groups. LTTE terrorism would have never being defeated, if then government listened to ngo human rights groups at that time. So eradicate this jackals issue soon.

Is there no move to eliminate the menace by destroying the jackals?

You idiot it was never eradicated anywhere in the world.. uneducated imbeciles should stop even daring to comment on medical issues, and leave it fully to the professionals.. sitting on the floor is good enough for you scum..

How can they say the fox is infected with rabies just because it entered the a house. It may have been looking for food. I thing the people are mad and not the animals in Sri Lanka. Just because a man chews "Bulath" and spits all over Sri Lanka is he or she mad. Specially the joker in yellow fancy dress.

Dilshan, what is your problem? Do you want to talk about it?

This is really misleading to assume when a wild animal bites someone that the animal is infected with rabies. This was a hungry animal and was looking for food and came across an infant which seemed as a pray for the wild animal. If no one was immediately available to chase the animal the infant could have been its last meal. STOP ASSUMING THINGS WHEN YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND the wildlife.

Pathirana why don't you go to that area and find all those jackals. Then take them to your home and look after then. Mental cases like you should be given as food for such jackals.
