An Indian passenger was arrested with more than one kilogram of methamphetamine (ice) worth Rs.10.7 million which had been concealed between sarees, Customs Director and Acting Spokesman Lal Weerakoon said.
He said the 53-year-old suspect was arrested by customs officers this morning.
“The suspect had declared the contraband to the customs as sarees and due to suspicious behaviour, the saree parcels were checked by the customs officers. The officers found the methamphetamine packed into a parcel which looks like a saree parcel,” he said.
The customs investigations revealed that the suspect was a frequent traveller from Chennai, Mr. Weerakoon said.
The suspect and the methamphetamine parcel are to be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigations, he added.
The detection was made by the Customs Superintendents Senaka Arawpola, K.D.R Perera, Assistant Superintendent K.P.S Samarasekara.
Investigations were carried out by Assistant Superintendents S.P.M.R Silva, W.N.D.C Welaratne, K.P.S. Samarasekara and D.M.B.C Dissanayake at BIA under the guidance of Deputy Director J.C. Murage, Saman Ranawana and Customs Additional Director General. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama and T.K.G. Kapila)
