Health Minister infected with COVID-19?

Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has reportedly gone into quarantine after a Rapid Antigen Test conducted on her yesterday for COVID-19 came in positive, sources told the Daily Mirror last night.

As a result, Wanniarachchi has self-isolated herself and undergone a PCR test, the results of which were still unknown as of late last night.

If Wanniarachchi's PCR test comes in positive, she will be the fifth parliamentarian and second cabinet minister to test positive for the virus.

Wanniarachchi had late last year partaken in several religious rituals, which included her dropping a holy pot into a river, to rid the country of the virus which has to date infected over 55,000 people and caused over 250 deaths.

She was also last month seen in pictures, consuming the anti COVID19 tonic, made by Ayurvedic practitioner Dhammika Bandara.

According to Health Ministry officials, Wanniarachchi has been listed in the first group to receive the anti COVID-19 vaccine along with healthcare workers, once the vaccines arrive in the country sometime next month. (JAMILA HUSAIN)

In many countries, Health workers as well as Health Ministers have contracted the virus because they are dealing with this at the front line . Some health workers including health ministers died as well. In this case we pray that our Health Minister recovers as so many others. It is not right to highlight that she took Dhammika Syrup and participated in religious activities when she herself has contracted the disease.

I am wishing for her speedy recovery. I need to make a point here that taking the syrup and floating a pot in the river are irrelevant here. Not even scientifically proven vaccine would not be 100 effective. So same goes gor syrup. It is not scientifically proven but it cannot be dismissed as useless. About the pot floating, you will realize that it is more symbolic and cultural to the people. Everyone knows it well. But politicians have to do these things to make some happy. But I consider that she will now become naturally immune after developing antibodies. But those who expect that vaccine will solve this problem, they are mostly mistaken.
