Responding to a tweet, former Sri Lanka Cricket Captain Mahela Jayawardena today said he is happy to serve his country even as a slave.

"I am happy to be a slave to build my country and will never be a slave to ruin it.." Jayawardena tweeted.

He made this comment in response to tweets criticizing his work with the recently formed national sports council.

One tweep questioned as to why Jayawardena addressed the sports minister with the title 'Honourable' in an earlier tweet by Jayawardena, to which another tweep replied "Mahela is from down South so he has the Slave genes in him."(Kalani Kumarainsghe)

I am an old man in my mid seventies. Mahela is a national treasure. Let him do what he has been selected to do. The partisan crowd should stop bickering.

Mahela is a straight forward person who will do the right thing for the country. So please don't blame him as there are only a few people who are genuine in the country now.
