The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has told the Health Ministry that mandating cremation is not a permissible restriction.
The Commission has written to the Ministry of Health issuing observations and recommendations on the disposal of dead bodies in the context of COVID-19.
In the letter, made public yesterday, the Commission says mandating the cremation of those who have died or suspected to have died from COVID-19 is neither necessary nor proportionate to the achievement of protection of public health and therefore is not a permissible restriction of the freedom to manifest religion or beliefs.
“The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka received complaints and expressions of concern from persons of various religious groups including Muslims, christian sand Buddhist son their inability to perform final religious rites after the death of persons in the context of Covid-19.amongst the concerns raised, are the forcible removal of bodies, lack of a standard process for determining whether the deceased person has in fact succumbed to the virus, lack of transparency surrounding the process and doubt as to the mandatory cremation requirement. Do we have the luxury to debate this matter endlessly when the pandemic is taking a heavy toll in the country. Let us follow the safest route and cremate all dead people who are suspected to have been infected by coronavirus. If Muslims are not happy about this then so be it.

The HRCSL is not a body consists of medical health experts . Therefore by dictating wrong terms on Covid 19 prevention program, the HRCSL itself violates the human rights of the human being of Sri Lanka . Down with HRCSL !@#?

Violating the rights of the minorities is not done out of ignorance, it is deliberate. We are a country like no other.

Mind your own business. Our government will do what is best for this country. You all look after the other countries. You guys interfered with the 30 year war too. So kindly mind your own business. Did the Easter Sunday bombers perform religious rights when they committed suicide ? There were so many who's bodies could not be found and some only body parts. Were they able to perform religious rights ?

Without poke your finger in area where your expertise is nill, see whether you be able to help reduce number of deaths by evacuating ,old and high risk people living in high density areas, temporarily to safer places with help of relatives

HRCSL is getting paid by lobbyists and issuing statements. This is a pandemic. Sri lanka's soil is not suitable for cremation of covid infected bodies. Most countries do not allow relatives to taketh body. Why make a big fuss in Sri Lanka.

HRC are not Medical experts. Nor are they experts at deciding the later effects of burying Covid-19 infected humans when it has been apparently proved that Minks infected with Covid -19 have infected the soil a few years after they were buried. MM

Why in India Muslims are not burried but cremated? Are they different kind of a Muslim? Now most of the Muslims are dieing inside the house without coming to hospital in fear of burning their bodies after Corona
