Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa told the ruling party’s parliamentary group yesterday the government would legislate against cattle slaughter soon.

He said it was a proposal mooted a long time ago, but could not be made into law.

Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardane told Daily Mirror the Prime Minister made this proposal which was not objected to by any of those present. However, he said there would be no ban on beef imports as a redress to meat-eaters.

“This is a proposal that exists since the time of nationalist leader Anagarika Dharmapala. No government was able to legislate against it,” he said.

The Prime Minister has taken this decision in his capacity of the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs. (Kelum Bandara)

Banning cattle slaughter is good, also some jobs lost but what about convicts in Parliament?

common man Tuesday, 08 September 2020 06:05 PM

Just the opposite of the presidents policy. Restricting imports to save foreign exchange.

Jaffna Yogan Tuesday, 08 September 2020 06:08 PM

As a Hindu I support your decision your excellency, our Prime Minister.

This is a very good decision. Sri Lanka should have decided this long time ago..However, even at late, stop killing this innocent animals is great!!

Funny fact Tuesday, 08 September 2020 07:04 PM

Fish, chicken, goats are not innocent then? Are they criminal? Double standards!

Eating other Animals not a problem??

    dara Thursday, 10 September 2020 01:18 PM

It's too a problem, but we have to start from some where, so it's better start from cattle

    Milkman Tuesday, 08 September 2020 06:16 PM

Most Sri Lankans will support this. The economic and social impact of this decision will have to be looked into.

sam silva Tuesday, 08 September 2020 06:19 PM

Rubbish. Slaughtering humans are okay and as a reward they are being elected to the parliament. Jaya Wewa !!

sam silva Tuesday, 08 September 2020 06:24 PM

Where are the beef imports coming from and this is an essential to country regardless restricting foreign exchange .

    Arnold Tuesday, 08 September 2020 06:37 PM

Government should spend cash and build retirement homes for aged cows. Farmers usually do not want to feed unproductive cows and excess bulls.

    nimtex Tuesday, 08 September 2020 07:03 PM

    Is Beef import also banned?

    Nesam Tuesday, 08 September 2020 07:03 PM

What a stupid idea. This is to allow American Beef imports, which is banned in the UK and EU due it's contamination with Growth Hormones, and other chemicals, which have a causal link to Bowel Cancer.

    Ryan Tuesday, 08 September 2020 08:10 PM

So don’t eat beef then. Regardless of where it comes from beef is generally bad for humans. We should all be moving towards a plant based diet. Better for the environment, our health and ethical.

Hey guys, this has nothing to do with killing cows...this is something they promised to LORD katharagama.

Cattle slaughter is good as it helps their lifecycle. You will not be able to feed them as the grow exponentially. So don't go against the nature as it will cause you suffering.

    SJ M samy Tuesday, 08 September 2020 08:19 PM

This decision is wrong. God created every thing for man to survive and behave decently. This confusion is all about ignorance about God's commandments. Greed, covetousness and all kind of hypocracies in life is the evil God hates more than being vej or nonvej. I'm sorry for the ignorance.

    DT Tuesday, 08 September 2020 08:34 PM

This will not be practical. Will require ministry of cattle management in case if this is implemented for a fun..

    Dabarahena Tuesday, 08 September 2020 08:35 PM

Our neighbouring country enacted a similar law a few years ago. The lawmakers were happy to see the cattle population growing. The milking ones brought profit to their masters. The non milking cattle got liberate and they multiplied. They filled the country side and walkways. Metropolitan cattle too did so. They learned to eat anything - garbage, paper etc. because they had to. The country gradually saw hungry, sick, dunging, disease carrying, dying, stinking, unattended, accident causing, some causing the cursing mentality in people, eventually becoming one of worst menaces of our neighbours. Ultimately they revoke the law. It took a decade perhaps for all this - law and de-law the burning issues. For us, the problem can be solved easily - with one minister for the milking/profit-earning ones and another for those other cattle.

    Lol Tuesday, 08 September 2020 08:37 PM

So killing of other animals is okay

    J S Samy Tuesday, 08 September 2020 08:40 PM

All the unspeakable evil and abonimal acts of the rich and powerful politicians and others is only sin against God. Eating meat is not at all sin. Eyes of understanding of the politicians should be opened.

    Raj Tuesday, 08 September 2020 08:41 PM

So we can kill and eat small animals and not big ones. It is like Big Animals' lives more valuable than small ones. No wonder this comes from politicians who think their lives more valuable than that of ordinary citizens!

SLAUGHTERING COWS WILL BE PROHIBITED. BUT WILL KILLING OF CHICKEN, PIGS (FOR POKE), HUNTING OF ANIMALS BE ALLOWED

    Cattle Tuesday, 08 September 2020 09:10 PM

What a great comedy decision. Cattle will be over populated, who will take care, who will feed them if there is no income from cattle.

    kumar Tuesday, 08 September 2020 09:21 PM

Is it ok to kill and eat goat, Chiken and Pigs? What a hypocrisy?

    G Das Tuesday, 08 September 2020 09:55 PM

I am 66 yrs old. I have never eaten beef. To that limited extent this is fine. But the decision does not seem to have taken into consideration the economic impact on dairy farming which the country is trying to promote. Also why only cattle if the decision stems from a animal lovers point of view?

    K.Soysa Wednesday, 09 September 2020 01:07 AM

Makes no sense! A dairy farmer, in order to make a profit, must dispose of unbreedable males and unprofitable females. That is the simple logic!! Also, beef has been a basic form of protein and flavour element in every Sri Lankan table. So, depriving these is not going to bring much merit.

    Si Wednesday, 09 September 2020 02:39 AM

    Good decision by the government..

    rss Wednesday, 09 September 2020 02:45 AM

if this decision is based on science, it is OK. this decision is based on religious belief. It reflects the approach the Hindus go against cow slaughter in India.

Don. SL Wednesday, 09 September 2020 03:21 AM

Like neighboring country, slaughter prohibited as this is mainly done by muslims, which affects their business. Then give this business to Appuhami and Banda and start exporting, which you will see sooner...

agasthi ranasinghe Wednesday, 09 September 2020 03:32 AM

It will add to the list of the stupid most decisions by the government. They are diverting folks interests to other things from their bad deals. Why only cattle, stop killing fish and chickens too ? What about the folks that have other religions than Buddhism or Hinduism ? They are Sri Lankans who have different religious perspectives and should have access to beef along with many beef eating Buddhists.

Adam Speak Wednesday, 09 September 2020 03:36 AM

There is no economic benefit in importing beef. Look India is one of the largest beef exporter in the world, although there are lot of hue and cry about local consumption. It's my personal view not to play Beef Politics.

    Rajanram B Wednesday, 09 September 2020 03:55 AM

Well Done Honourable Prime Minister. The Tamils as per our belief, will support You for it.

    Dot Wednesday, 09 September 2020 04:16 AM

Cows are imported for milk .in breeding the cows there could be male calves ..What happens then ? Are we going to abort them ? Killing all animals is against religious principles .fish fowl goat or game ..we have to tread slowly and think in depth before the rhetoric ..how to lead the people!

    Mohamed Wednesday, 09 September 2020 04:41 AM

Good decision as this will help Muslim men dieing at age 55 due to heart disease - They eat so much beef with fat and soup - finally end up heart disease die at a very young age - Good decision - Cow urine can be exported too - Now they might change the law

Neville Jayakody Wednesday, 09 September 2020 05:07 AM

When did Mahinda got the doctors advice not to eat meat? Namal can import beef but we cannot afford!

Ruwan putha Wednesday, 09 September 2020 05:16 AM

It is long overdue nevertheless Thank you. I hope govt. will implement it very soon not in 2025. Saadhu, Saadhu, Saadhu. As Buddhists you have our family support on this.

Sam Silva Wednesday, 09 September 2020 05:47 AM

Slaughter of dog and cats for meat are allowed in Korea and China. This is a long-held tradition of these people. This not allowed in western countries although large number of Koreans and Chinese live these countries for a long time. That means every country has the right to ban slaughter of certain animals according to the majority wishes. As it is banned in most states of India and in Sri Lanka with predominantly Buddhist and Hindu religions, we should do the same. Hat off to these politicians who has the courage to take these bold decisions.

    sss Wednesday, 09 September 2020 05:51 AM

drinking milk and eating beef. It is like eating flesh of the mother

    M Amarasiri Wednesday, 09 September 2020 06:33 AM

Prime Minister, Our Paleolithic ancestors ate high calorie and high nutrition meat, and that is part of the reason to have bigger brains. Now the brains of Sri Lankan’s will shrink, to the size of chimpanzees.

    Ralph Wednesday, 09 September 2020 06:57 AM

Healthwise, most meat items are unhealthy. Chicken is hormone treated. Fish can have mercury. Large fish rejected by exporters after testing for mercury are dumped in the local market. Shrimp is aquacultured and full of chemicals. All imported meat including beef and mutton are hormone treated. At present, the only food that is safe from hormones and chemicals are local beef and goat mutton.

    Lawry Wednesday, 09 September 2020 07:00 AM

2nd highest exporter of beef in the world is INDIA. But I do support the ban. Good for the cattle that gives the world milk.

Haris Wijayasiri Wednesday, 09 September 2020 07:03 AM

what do we have against Fish?

    Odin Wednesday, 09 September 2020 07:13 AM

And while you are at it ban fishing too, you moron!

    Modaya Wednesday, 09 September 2020 07:25 AM

20A is being criticised by various parties. If people aware the seriousness of 20A will come to road and start to protest against it. I think government trying to divert people's focus. Banning cattle slaughter is not a serious issue as 20A. Better people and media focus on primary issue.

Anura Jay Wednesday, 09 September 2020 07:38 AM

Excellent proposal as Buddhists long overdue best wishes for the PM

    safeek Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:08 AM

The Government will never ban killing! this is just a eye wash. Let the government nab it for one year. then see how the price of Chicken and fish go up. The Rural Economy will collapse. These Politicians do not know for any occasion rural family sell their cattle but no one will buy it if its ban...........please ban it soon

    Sambo Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:14 AM

Dear Sir, we know that none of these decisions are taken with good intentions but merely to satisfy some clergy and show the world we are good Buddhists but it's good to have people in parliament who have killed human beings. What shame.

    Simion Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:15 AM

Please import beef for those who eats beef and don't deprive them of their rights.

    Sambo Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:17 AM

What they dream in the night they try to implement by morning just because they have the power to misuse it.

    Neil Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:20 AM

We have lots of stray dogs, now we will have lots of stray cattle too. We need to manage the animal population. Importation is not the answer when we can produce all our needs at home. You cannot have an efficient dairy production system without removing excess animals, especially male animals and unproductive animals. There is many sides to every issues.

    Noname Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:23 AM

MR has finally gone bonkers! Now we will have even more stray cattle by the roads. Isn't it much more sensible to introduce a strict regulatory framework to ensure animals are treated with respect and not subject to undue pain/mistreatment/cruelty during handling/processing? MR should first ban Buddhists from slaughtering/processing/selling beef.

    Muhandiram Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:35 AM

    1. Trying to please the Tamil Hindus and get their support for the Govt.'s Plans 2. Trying to please Modi and India. Now, the Govt. can go ahead with the MCC to please the US.

    MirakRajBanda Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:43 AM

Good move? Please let him ban pigs, goats, chickens being sloughtered and complete ban on fishing if he is unbiased or otherwise, shall I take it as highly politically motivated move to satisfy the ultra, far right religious extremists???

Kapila Senaratne Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:52 AM

I guess finally Latter part of our premiere’s life all sins washed away. Great job.

I thought slaughtering cows was already illegal .. though they do so by conniving with the PHI and the Local Authorities

    prasanna Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:56 AM

Bad dissection, what should have been done is to bringing proper system for the animal slaughter houses. In a developed country, until the animal dies it doesn’t know it’s going to die. We need to start form the transport to end of his life

Muthutantri Fernando Wednesday, 09 September 2020 08:57 AM

Why cant we all become vegans? My family members are vegans. No dairy/no meat at all. Why cant the Buddhists and Hindus especially, become vegans and spare the innocent animals. If you know what is factory farming, you will see how cruel it is. killing all animals should be banned not only cows.

    Nirmala Wednesday, 09 September 2020 11:25 AM

Well done MR. Priminister, this should have done long time ago. Import beef and increase the price, that will stop people eating beef. Mr Priminister please stop animal sacrifices

    Zameer Wednesday, 09 September 2020 12:01 PM

People have to slaughter either around 10 goats or around 100 hens or many hundred fish to replace one cow. I feel it's unfair as far as the life's are concerned.Further demand for alternatives will increase , resulting in price increase and food shortages. Finally if import is allowed some foreigner will slaughter on behalf of Sri Lankans. What's the logic.

Kumar Dissa Wednesday, 09 September 2020 02:17 PM

Those with one foot in the grave trying short cuts to Nibbana.

Umar Rasheed Wednesday, 09 September 2020 04:09 PM

This country has bigger problems I believe:)

    Ruzaick Thursday, 10 September 2020 04:42 AM

All leaders try on minimize imports by producing it locally but what happens here is vice verse. The secret animal is prohibited to be slaughtered in srilanka but if its slaughtered in another country for imports its fine,Sounds rediculous. Why Don't the Buddhist country Ban liquor? Cattles are considered more sacret than humans.?
