The elections commission announced a short while ago that the general election would be held on August 5.
Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya made the announcement at a news briefing held at the Commission today.
On Monday, Mr. Deshapriya said a final decision on the election date would be made this week after having discussions with political parties.
Meanwhile, the gazette notification with the preferential numbers of the candidates was published yesterday.
