A policy decision was taken to provide free electricity connection to 1,607 houses which are without electricity before the coming Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Power Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said.

He said this while addressing a meeting at the Matara District Secretariat recently.

During the meeting, a special discussion was held on the present status of the power supply, as well as the measures taken by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) led by the Ministry to stabilize and develop the relevant supply in the future.

"Now we are in the final stages of the islandwide illumination programme. In terms of districts, there are around 282,000 electricity consumers in the Matara district. However, 1,607 households have not yet been provided with electricity," the Minister said.

Funds have already been allocated for the project under Presidential order, the Minister added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

    What a shock! Sunday, 07 February 2021 04:16 PM

Why build houses unless you can have a free electricity connection? Do you buy a car and pay to have the car started? Yes, you pay for petrol and electricity you may consume but an electricity connection!

Did you find only 1607 houses in Sri Lanka without electricity? May be you are suffering from tunnel vision confined to Matara district only. Or is it a very rosy picture for the country?
