Foreign Medics without SLMC registration practising at SL Army: Nalinda

JVP MP Nalinda Jayatissa today revealed that some doctors who had graduated from foreign universities were practising at the Sri Lankan Army without being registered under the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).

He told parliament that it was illegal for any doctor to practice without the SLMC registration.

"The doctors can obtain the membership of the SLMC only after undergoing an internship. Doctors graduating from foreign universities should pass the Act16 exam to get eligibility to undergo an internship. Some graduates from foreign universities are practising as doctors for the army without SLMC registration," he said.

He said the reason given by the army for the situation was that graduates from Sri Lankan universities were not applying for vacancies in the army as doctors and added that the government should formulate a mechanism to overcome the situation instead of recruiting unregistered doctors from foreign universities. This is a statement that could help Sri Lankan people. This should check whether the Army get treatment from quacks/bogus doctors. In other countries army receives the treatment from best doctors at state of the art army hospitals.

Mr JVP man, the problem is none of you have science or maths degrees to understand that the work the doctors do can be easily done by any common man with just a few months of training. Prescribing drugs made by Scientists is not an intellectual activity, and if you consider operations it is a craft , just like a butcher or a mechanic and you could learn it by practice.
