The daily caseload of COVID-19 shows a slight downward trend but it is too early to make any conclusion, an official said yesterday.

Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath told Daily Mirror the health authorities should observe the situation for another couple of weeks to see the trend. He said the number of PCR tests done for a day was reduced during the festive season.

The health authorities used to do 15,000 tests, but it was reduced to 10,000 during the festive period.

“We eased restrictions during the time. Also, health workers had been exhausted after working for days on end. So we needed to give them some respite from collecting swabs and sample testing. Now, we are planning to increase testing. Then, we have to see whether the cases spike or not,” he said. (KELUM BANDARA)
