A total of 10,379 cases are being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the primary investigative arm of the Sri Lanka Police.
CID Director SSP Shani Abeysekera said that most of the cases they are investigating are in connection with fraud incidents.
He said eight units of the CID investigating most of the cases in which the five units established to investigate fraud cases while three Special Investigation Units are assigned to investigate other cases.
CID was established in 1870 and it handles cases of a very serious nature that require specialist skills and complex detection.
Since 1870, the CID probed special cases which attracted lot of public attention such as the Vidya murder case in Jaffna, Kalattewa murder case, the Rohitha Dias case, the airport attack, Customs Officer Sujith Prasanna Perera murder case, six persons that were murdered in Delkanda, Angulana murder case, Royal Park case, Bharatha Premachandra incident, the assassination attempt of former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Lasantha Wickrematunge murder case, Prageeth Ekneligoda case, abduction and assault of senior journalist Keith Noyahr, assault on Upali Thennakoon and Mohammad Siyam's murder case.
SSP Abeysekera said CID had being criticised time to time during their investigations and also their investigating officers were threatened. He said that criticism was not an issue as long as we thrive to seek the truth in any crime scene.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
