The Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) today called on all trade unions, including school principals, to protest at the parliament roundabout on December 1 against the recent budget proposals for education, as it did not solve the salary anomalies by for teachers and principals.

Addressing the media CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the debate focusing on education will be taken up on December 1, and he called on teachers and principals to gather near parliament on that day to stage a protest.

"There we will hold a massive protest," he said.

Stalin said nothing had been mentioned in the recent budget proposal to solve the teachers’ and principals’ salary anomalies.

"Earlier three cabinet papers were submitted to the Parliament in this regard, but still, no solution was received.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa even promised to solve the issue under this new Government. But the Prime Minister had read the budget proposal mentioning nothing related to the salary anomalies of Teachers’ and Principals," he said.

“The President promised to introduce a close service while connecting all services attached to the teachers and principals. A total of 247,000 teachers and 15,000 principals had hopes about this budget proposal,” he said.

Passing the budget proposal without mentioning anything about the teachers’ and principals’ issue cannot cheat them, Mr Stalin added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
