The Cabinet is reported to have yesterday approved the memorandum submitted by President Maithripala Sirisena to ban the import of chainsaws.

The President had earlier revealed that this move was to prevent the illegal felling of trees by racketeers.

However, Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka requested the President to exempt government institutions from this ban saying chainsaws were needed by local authorities to prune or chop trees in city and town areas.

“It is difficult to find labourers to cut down trees manually using normal saws,” he said.

There are some 86,000 chainsaws registered in Sri Lanka. (Kelum Bandara)

President has gone Mad together with the Cabinet. Banning chain saws to prevent cutting trees is like cutting your nose to spite the smell of pollutants from the Garbage not collected. No country in the world has banned a device which saves on Labor. This may be another move by India to send more and more unskilled starving labor to Sri Lanka. Just as they were brought by the British. We will next see the ban on all construction handheld items as well as even Concrete Mixers. Madmen rule us today. People go mad before the Gods destroy them.

What a stupid idea. Ban the 225 chain saws in the parliament. They are the prime cause.

The administration of laws that leads to a civilized society, they know very well, have failed, and so theses warped moves to placate the public. Confusion worse confounded, the final end, the collapse of a nation.
