Parliamentarians who are arrested should be sent to the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) restrooms and not to the Welikada prison, Transport Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said, commenting on the conditions of SLTB crew restrooms.

He was on an inspection tour at the SLTB’s crew restrooms.

“The driver and conductor restrooms look like hell on earth,” he quipped.

"The toilets at the driver and conductor restrooms are flooded and stink. The restrooms are full of dust and cobwebs. Due to the high temperature in the area, the rooms are like ovens.

“No fans or bulbs are found. The restrooms look like caves," the Minister said.

The Minister promised to repair the restrooms with air-conditioning facilities. He also promised to provide new beds.

He inspected the passenger transport facilities provided during the festive season and the standard of the facilities that had been given to the passengers at the SLTB.

The Minister said he noted that the required bus service had been assigned to passengers to reach home, but not enough facilities had been provided for them to take food and sanitary facilities.

The Minister inspected the public toilet facilities and said the facilities were poor.

During the inspection, the Minister found out the doors of the public toilet had been damaged. Later the Minister called the contractor in charge of maintaining the public toilets and directed him to repair all the damages and repaint them.

“If the directive is not carried out the Ministry will cancel the contract,” he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Minister is on the right path. No decent person could use our public washrooms due to the unsanitary conditions. I speak after having experienced my own “Hell on Earth” experience of using the Colombo bus stand’s public washroom. We need to learn and copy the “pay to use” washroom system that other countries have implemented and especially the City of Chennai, India. Some of you remember the American TV’s - Amazing Race sequel, where a contestant lambasted our train’s washroom? Gota is now the President and had lived in the US for many years and enjoyed that country’s life standards. He can easily implement some of the finest / basic things he had experienced while living in that first world country to our Island.

As usual , contractor got the contract, paid the politicasses commission, then calculate his profit, nothing left behind to full fill his contractual obligations. That's the story behind it.

The blame goes both ways and the weather too plays an important factor in the appalling conditions of the facilities provided in the bus stations around the country. Most people use the facilities without considering that there are other users as well. Maintenence is unheard of and non availibility of water also contributes to the terrible condition. I wish the Minister good luck in his efforts to provide good facilities for the travellers.

Rest rooms of this nature and public toilets are a sorry state. You were also a minister in the yahapalana and what was your contribution? Your suggestion is good and should hold good for all politicians, until sorted out.

" Sinhalaya modeyaa" truly reflects in some of the above comments.
