A protest campaign organised by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was held in front of the Borella General Cemetery Colombo today. The protesters requested the authorities not to burn the bodies of the Muslim COVID victims and also they urged to stop forcible cremation. Pix by Pradeep Dilrukshana

Cremating a 20 days old baby with no consent of their grieving parents. What a cruel, respectless country this is. But I am very happy to see a Buddhist monk in the pictures

It is a pity it is only one Buddhist monk. One should expect the whole Buddhist community will be demonstrating too against this violance and injustice against human lives

It may be their problem, but it remains the RIGHT of any national minded Government to safeguard the future generations of people. Covid-19 virus CAN and WILL leak into the surrounding soil and contaminate the surface in time. Who will answer to an ongoing disaster for future Sri Lankan generations by partisan people with little knowledge of these matters. So please heed the advice of Medical leaders and DO NOT ALLOW BURIAL OF ANY DEAD PERSON WHO HAS PASSED AWAY FROM COVID-19 INFECTION. CREMATION OF THESE INDIVIDUALS MUST BE THE RULE AND IT SHOULD STAY AS SUCH FOR ALL. Burial of such persons dying from COVID-19, would be lethal for the future generations in Sri Lanka. Now who will answer to that- Pray tell us??? Not only the Muslims but the Sinhala Buddhist people also have to obey these rules. However they are respecting the advice of Medical Leaders in this regard and not coming out in protest like some unthinking inconsiderate sections in the community. MM

It is not only Muslims who bury their dead - even the Roman Catholics bury their dead and they too do not support cremation of their dead.

reply to comment by Martin : Oh I see you seems very smarter in terms of the water contamination in shallow water when several PHDs specialized in water borne decease have asserted with proof that this is not true. Evidence 189 countries bury and there have never been a problem except in Sri Lanka. One of the many causes for backwardness of this good resourced country is taking petty issues to become major news thereby country development is slowing. Man created from dust or earth and he goes back to it’s origin where he is created and he will be raised once again on the judgment day. Cremating is against human nature for any religious denominations and costly as well as environmental disaster. Rather burying is surely natural and certainly virus killer due to the strong earth’s chemical elements which causes the body to be easily decomposed and does not pose any danger to the living. These are very simple science even the children could understand these days due to advanced learnin

Sri Lankan scientific experts opinions are stranger than fiction...This is a grave injustice against the muslim and catholic brethrens.

Bernard, the pope made a statement about cremation in 1991, catholics are allowed to be cremated, but prohibited from venerating ashes in a shrine.

added comments due to space restrictions : As you said that this will pose danger for future generation, then I am asking you from the day 01 of this earth’s creation until today how many millions died and recently with more lethal viruses like Ebola and all buried without any problems until today? There is a not single report saying that people are killed or sick due to earth soil contamination. This is very clear that the action of the health authorities in Sri Lanka is nothing but racial. Believe me if this is how we live in our beautiful country it will be no more beautiful. With unity and respect we can achieve success and make our dream come true to become better than Singapore.
