Colombo Municipal Council has received about 60,000 complaints regarding alleged unfair charges made by parking meters installed in certain areas in the Colombo city limits, Colombo Municipal Councillor Sumith Passaperuma said.
He said this system of automatic charging was implemented along the Galle Road and by-roads in 2015 but since it was met with many complaints related to unfair fines imposed, those fines were abolished in 2018 by the Colombo Mayor.
“However, imposing of these fines has resumed secretly,” Mr. Passaperuma said. Out of the many complaints, he said it is impossible to get the balance money after tendering the required amount to the machine. “Only 48% of the total income earned by this system is received by the Municipal Council,” Mr. Passaperuma said. Because cheap machines has been installed and it takes ages for it to accept money. Poor visibility and small screens.

People want free parking. But can buy millions worth vehicle. How can we ever develop?

Actually Dee, I am very happy to pay for the parking. Even when they increased the cost overnight (without informing) from Rs. 30 per hour to Rs. 50 per hour, I was fine with it. Even though we receive NO benefit from paying - these are the same spots on the pavement that have always been there and there is nothing 'extra' about it (not even a CCTV camera), I was fine about it. But when you pay Rs. 1500 as a fine cos you were 20 minutes late to come out of office, ( and you have already paid Rs. 450 for a 9 hour slot) its NOT FAIR and I am NOT okay with it. Your comment about having money to buy a car but not having money to pay for parking is crass. We pay high TAXES from our salary as well as road tax and the annual revenue licence. Its not a luxury to have a vehicle anymore. And just because we make the payment for a lease does not mean we are rolling in pots of money. Your statement is ignorant, to say the least.

47% of Sri Lankans use Smart Phones. Just download the APP. It takes less than 2 minutes to make the payment and is hassle free. We Lankans love to complain for everything when there is always a better way of doing things.

1. Now what this new letter we get from CMC asking to pay 25,000 as later payment fee 2. When i went to CMC , its a pvt ltd office staff staying inside a government office under one Engineer , just to collect fee 3. This is a scam
