As many as 40 countries, a bulk of them from European region, have become signatories to the resolution to be moved against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council either as co-sponsors and additional co-sponsors, making it an uphill task for the Government to defeat it, Daily Mirror learns.

The final draft of the resolution has been communicated to the Government. According to the draft which Daily Mirror has seen, Marshal Islands and Malawi are the only two non-european or western countries to sign it. Of these 40 countries, 12 states have voting rights at the UNHRC this time.

The resolution will be put to a vote on March 22 during the session. Sri Lanka has already disapproved the resolution and its content. Earlier, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa wrote to the leaders of the member states asking for support to thwart the adoption of any resolution on

Sri Lanka. Despite Sri Lanka’s reversal of mandatory cremation of Muslim Covid19 victims, the core group of countries has not excluded the content related to it in the resolution. The Sri Lankan Government views this as a move to block support from the member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Among the countries that back Sri Lanka are China, Pakistan, Russia, Cuba, the Philippines and Venezuela.

The resolution calls for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Council to increase monitoring on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka. (KELUM BANDARA)

DON'T worry !! UNHRC DON'T have the mandate nor jurisdictions !! These resolutions means Nothing !! Yeah!!

Somewhat true. However, the Chinese loans are paid back through the income generated by export to EU and the USA. If they start introducing sanctions, Sri Lanka does not have much leeway other than to sell more and more national assets to China and then become a vassal state. Good luck!

We should take a couple of hundred Paroo demilos and threaten to execute them if this resolution that affects our shinhala Buddhist human rights of periodically engaging in pogroms on demilos is denied

China, Russia, Venezuela; countries where human rights are at its worst, and they are our supporters.

It is sad that Sri Lanka is only supported by countries that are the largest human rights violators in the world. Not a good reputation for this country. But the constant and stubborn insistence on being innocent, even though the entire community of states knows and has beyond doubt proven that the SL Forces committed cruel war crimes against their minority, was not a good basis for negotiation.

Its a good resolution, asking us to correct things, so why do we worry ?

Mike Revere Tuesday, 23 March 2021 11:45 AM

It is very good that others pass resolutions so that we can course correct ourselves before we fall into the pit. Respond well without taking issue to see a good national outcome.
