The official weapon of a Sergeant in the Aluthgama police misfired causing injuries to a soldier who called over at the Aluthgama police to see his father in custody. The injured soldier attached to the Engineering Corps of the Army was a resident of Haburugala in Bentota.
He was admitted to the Nagoda hospital. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the police sergeant was examining the weapon when it misfired. ASP Nishan De Silva said the officer concerned was arrested pending further action. Actg. OIC Aluthgama Police CI Sudasinghe, IP Chandraratne and Kalutara Division Crime Investigation Unit IP Janaka are conducting further investigations on the instructions of ASP Nishan De Silva, SP Kapila Premadasa and DIG Vijitha Gunaratne.
