UNP will become an alternative political force that would replace the present government before long, its Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said over the weekend.
Addressing a UNP meeting in Kegalle, Mr. Wijewardene said his party would be reorganised in both national and constituency level in two years’ time realise this goal.
“It seems that people want UNP to be represented in Parliament. This is why they always ask as to who would go to Parliament from the UNP through the national list. They want an alternative political force. We will become such a force in two years’ time. We have already organised our party to realise this goal,” he said.
“Kegalle is not a new place for me. My mother’s people hail from this area. The Late D. S. Senanayake and Late Dudley Senanayake who represented Dedigama some time back are my relatives. The Senanayake’s never robbed public funds but donated their private funds to the people.
Mr. Dudley Senanayake had only Rs.300 in his bank account when he died. However, today’s politicians are right opposite as they are always looking to rob public funds. This country needs another a political culture similar to Senanayake era,” he added.
Mr. Wijewardene said many businesses will have to be closed down next year given the economic downturn.
