The UNP requested the Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday, to decline the application made to register a new political party by the name Samagi Jathika Balawegaya.
The Legal Secretary of the UNP Attorney-at-law PC Nissanka Nanayakkara had made this request from the EC yesterday in writing. The UNP states in their letter that they had come to know of an application made to the EC to register a political party by the name ‘Samagi Jathika Balawegaya’ and when this name is translated into English it would be United National Power and its abbreviation would be U N P and in the event such a party is registered it would bear a similarity to the already registered U N P and therefore refrain from recognising the new party, the Legal Secretary further reiterates in his letter.
