The UNP should learn from its past mistakes and should pay attention to the needs and wants of the party members, party’s Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.
Mr. Wijewardene who was speaking during the opening of a party office in Matara said many senior UNPers failed to focus the requirements of party members at grass-root level when ruling the country from 2015. “Those who held ministries only focused on their respective ministry work ignoring the party members. This is why we had to suffer a defeat and a division,” Mr. Wijewardene said. “A party such as the UNP is needed at a time such as this when draconian legislation is to be introduced and when leaders of the government say their verbal statements should be considered as circulars. The Main opposition parties such as the UNP is needed at a time when the prices of commodities such as coconuts are decided based on the circumference of the nut ,” Mr. Wijewardene added.
