A 68-year-old woman and her 49-year-old daughter-in-law have been arrested at the Anuradhapura Prison when they attempted to smuggle heroin into the prison, concealing them inside a loaf of bread, the police said.
They said the suspects had hidden 6.2 grammes of heroin inside the bread with the intention of giving it to the 68-year old woman’s son, who is an inmate at the prison.
The police said the inmate was in remand custody on charges of heroin possession.
The women, residents of Anuradhapura, were arrested following a tip-off.
Meanwhile, two more women were arrested during two separate raids in Grandpass and Angulana on charges of heroin possession. A 35-year-old woman in Grandpass was arrested with 4.2 grammes of heroin by the Colombo Crimes Division, while a 26-year-old woman from Piliyandala, was arrested for possessing 3 grammes of heroin by the Angulana Police.
