UNP Kalutara District candidate Palitha Thewarapperuma was hospitalised after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of people at Wekandala in Matugama yesterday, police said.
They said he had been assaulted following an argument with some individuals of a company which had undertaken a project to lay water pipes in the area.
The former State Minister was admitted to the Kalutara General Hospital in Nagoda reportedly with serious injuries to his leg.
A surgery to his leg was pending on admission to hospital.
