It is a twist of irony that the UNP which introduced the provincial council system at a cost of numerous lives has rendered it redundant today, Anuradhapura district UPFA MP S.M. Chandrasena said yesterday.
He told journalists at his residence in Kurandankulama, in Anuradhapura. He said that the former chief ministers Maheepala Herath- Sabaragamuwa Province and Ranjith Samarakone of North Central Province have filed petitions seeking a court order to hold the provincial council elections. He said it had been done under the instruction of former Minister Prof. G.L.Peiris. The petition is due to be heard on Mach 29. He said six provincial councils stand dissolved and among them is the north central provincial council.
He said these PCs were established as a result of the agreement signed by then President J.R. Jayawardane and then Indian Prime Minister Rajeev Ghandi amid massive protests by the people which causing damage to lives and properties. With the dissolution of two more PCs in April, people of eight provincial councils will be deprived of their electoral rights. It will result in people having to approach the officials of the government who are not sensitive to their problems of health education or agricultural needs.
