The suicide bomber had run inside St Sebastian’s church in Negombo at the end of the Easter Sunday service and had blasted himself, a devotee who witnessed the incident told Daily Mirror yesterday.
“The mass was over. A villager was giving the vote of thanks while the preparations were on for the traditional procession. The statue of risen Jesus Christ is taken around in precession after the Easter Sunday service. The suicide bomber had come running in and had blasted himself causing devastation,” the devotee who did not wished to be named said.
The roof of the church had collapsed injuring scores of people and damaging the religious statues which were on either side.
Head of the social relations unit of Catholic Church in Colombo Fr. Edmond Tilakaratne said there were more than 50 bodies inside the church when he visited the place.
