A businessman from Dehiwala and five others were arrested yesterday after a stampede in Maligawatte killed three women and injured eight.
Police Spokesman Jaliya Senaratna said the incident occurred at Jumma Masjid Road in Maligawatte yesterday,
He said the incident had occurred when a group of about 500 people had gathered at a house, where cash had been distributed by an individual.
It was revealed that the vehicle spare-parts businessman from Dehiwala had a warehouse at Jumma Masjid Road and he had brought Rs. 450,000 in cash to be distributed.
The injured were admitted to the National Hospital. The roads leading to Jumma Masjid Road were temporarily closed following the incident.
