Mankulam Police said that 12 buffaloes were killed and six others injured when a truck crashed into a herd ambling across a highway in Mulaithivu in the Northern Province.
The owner of the herd told Police that the accident had occurred near the Catholic Church of Oddusudan along the Oddusudan Mankulam road, and the lorry had been speeding at the time.
The owner of the buffaloes said he was in a helpless situation following this incident and that these buffaloes had been given by an NGO for the people who have suffered losses due to the war.
Mankulam Police said that steps would be taken to arrest the driver of the tipper, since it was an accident caused by recklessness.
