Offenders to be produced before psychiatrists
By Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya
The Police have launched special operations in the Colombo, Gampaha Districts and in suburbs to apprehend night street racers, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said yesterday.
The move comes following the recent tragic accident in Egodauyana, in which two children were killed and their mother critically injured when a speeding motorcycle by a reckless driver crashed into them.
DIG Rohana said that it was mostly the youngsters who engaged in street racing, using cars and motorcycles, especially during night violating road regulations.
He said the Mirihana Police received a tip-off about the illegal race of motorcycles at the Kimbulawala Junction on Sunday.
Accordingly, a team of Police Officers have taken 24 motorcycles into custody along with riders engaged in the street racing.
He said the Police would file charges against the riders for violation of traffic rules and regulations.
“In the future, the law will be strictly enforced against such persons and they will be produced before psychiatrists on court orders. Necessary steps will be taken to stop such new emerging subcultures immediately,” DIG Rohana said.
“It has been observed that they ride motorcycles or drive cars in the thick of night for the thrill of it. However, in the end, we are losing valuable lives. Apart from that, sometimes the victims sustain serious injuries. Therefore, the Traffic Police have been instructed to take appropriate action to conduct operations throughout the country to curtail this activity,” he said.
“We request the young people not to drive fast. Obey road rules and regulations, especially in the night,” he said.
