Army Commander Lt. General Shavendra Silva and Defence Secretary Major General (Retired) Kamal Gunaratne have been promoted to the rank of General by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Shavendra Silva was appointed as Commander of THE Sri Lanka Army and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General on August 21, 2019.
He is also the Chief of Defence Staff. Following the Covid- 19 outbreak in the country, the president appointed General Silva as the head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID- 19 Outbreak (NOCPCO). Kamal Gunaratne was enlisted to the Army on August 31, 1981 and received commission as a 2nd Lieutenant on December 4, 1982. After retiring from active military service in 2016, he was appointed Defence Secretary on November 20, 2019.
