Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam yesterday urged parents to send their children to school without any fear because the Police, armed forces, the STF, school vigilant committees and school management have assured their safety.

He told that certain trade union leaders living on ‘Mutti Kasi’ or trade union tills want to disrupt the education system for reasons best known to them.

“Are you going to listen to those bankrupt trade union sharks or do you place your trust in the Police and armed forces to take decisions on matters related to the education of your child? Who are these trade unionists who cannot hold a candle to a police constable on security matters?” Minister Kariyawasam asked parents.

“The attendance of students is improving daily and I believe by next Monday (13) 100% student and teacher attendance can be expected,” Minister Kariyawasam said.

Minister Kariyawasam said information has reached him from around the country that certain trade unions, with the help of some teachers and principals, were influencing parents not to send children to school. He said these people are those influenced by their political masters and added an investigation would be carried out to identify those teachers and principals and strict disciplinary action would be instigated against them if found guilty.

The thinking of these traitors is that they would be able to score a few brownie points not thinking about the fact that the children’s education, public administration and the day-to-day life of the people would be disrupted as a result of their actions, Minister Kariyawasam charged.
