The faction supporting MP Sajith Premadasa is contemplating to form a broad opposition alliance if he were not given UNP leadership, MP Harin Fernando told Daily Mirror yesterday.
“We contemplate forming a new alliance if the UNP leader does not step down. We will reveal the parties included in the alliance later on,” he said.
Meanwhile, the UNP announced that Mr. Premadasa would be its prime ministerial candidate. He has been named as the new opposition leader. However, Mr. Premadasa has publicly stated that he would not contest general elections if denied party leadership.
The Premadasa faction has been campaigning for a leadership change in the party since the presidential election culminated.
