The UNP faction led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has decided to legally establish the proposed political alliance with the like-minded parties by changing the name of a political party which is functional at the moment, Daily Mirror learns.
This is the strategy adopted by many political forces in getting legal recognition because the registration of a party is a time consuming exercise.
The UNP faction, backed by other parties, has already struck a deal with a small political party. This party will soon call for its convention and change its name as suggested by the leaders of the proposed alliance. Afterwards, it will name UNP MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara as its general secretary and notify it to the Election Commission.
Afterwards, the members of the proposed alliance will be appointed as its remaining office bearers.
In the past, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and Front line Socialist Party were created in this fashion.
