The Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (SLCOG) yesterday said it was deeply concerned about the recent reports regarding infertility caused by intentional damage to the Fallopian tubes at caesarean sections and added any surgical procedure performed without informed consent is unethical and unacceptable.

Prof. Athula Kaluarachchi, President, SLCOG said since these reports had appeared in the media, the SLCOG council offered its technical expertise to the Ministry of Health for any investigation to be done on this matter. Accordingly, on the request of the Secretary of Health, two members were nominated to a panel of investigators representing the SLCOG.
“The present situation may result in public losing confidence in the health services available to them. The SLCOG is also concerned about the likely impact the above reports could have on maternal health care services in the country,” Prof. Kaluarachchi stressed.  The SLCOG would strongly urge an expeditious and transparent investigation by the authorities concerned since the SLCOG as a professional organization does not have the authority to investigate matters of this nature, he added.

Prof. Kaluarachchi noted that the SLCOG membership was prepared to offer professional assistance to the public on this issue.
