Former Minister of Fisheries Development Dilip Wedaarachchi caught global attention, following his stunt of eating raw fish in a bid to promote fish sales in the country.
News outlets across the world including the Daily Mail, the Sun, India Today, Sky News, Deccan Herald, US News and the Telegraph reported the Minister’s actions, with some media outlets calling it a bizarre news conference.
Following the detection of the Covid-19 cluster from the Peliyagoda fish market, fish sales across the country dwindled, as the public feared contracting Coronavirus from fish and seafood. The former minister attempted to assure the public that eating fish was safe and would not result in people contracting Covid-19.
