The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) is to record statements from MP Rajitha Senaratne and his son Chathura Senaratne over a false complaint made by a journalist that he was abducted on March 10.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the ‘Siyarata’ web journalist Sujeewa Gamage has been arrested for making false accusation. The journalist was admitted to the hospital on March 10 claiming that he was abducted, tortured for info on his sources and political contacts before being dumped at a street corner in Maligawatte.
The spokesman said the CCD launched investigations into the incident and it was disclosed that the journalist had made a fake complaint. It was revealed that he had visited former MP Chathura Senaratne’s office at Thimbirigasyaya and left the office after over three hours before getting himself admitted to the Hospital.
DIG Rohana said the journalist had also met MP Rajitha Senaratne at Chathura’s office before being admitted to the hospital. He said the suspect had confessed to the police that there was no truth behind his abduction.
DIG Rohana said the CCD would question the MP and his son over their links to the journalist and said the journalist would be produced in court. Following the abduction claim, former speaker Karu Jayasuriya and MP Harsha de Silva also critisized the government in their twitter accounts.
