President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had sought a report from Higher Education Minister Bandula Gunawardane regarding the present status of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) which is commonly called the Malabe Private Medical College.
Minister Gunawardane said he undertook a fact finding mission to the SAITM premises. He said the Neville Fernando Hospital affiliated to the SAITM had been acquired by the government in the past.
Besides, he said the SAITM authorities were planning to sell off its assets to a leading retail chain to settle its loans.
“We will inform the President about it,” he said.
SAITM was mired in controversy after the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) protested with regard to private medical education.
