The government yesterday said that it would not conduct the parliamentary election, till such time the COVID-19 virus is completely eliminated from the country, putting to rest the rumors that polls may likely be held in the first week of June.
Government Spokesperson Mahindananda Aluthgamage told Daily Mirror that no discussions were held to conduct a general elections any time soon, as the priority of the President was to ensure that the country was safe from the virus.
“No talks on the elections have even been held unofficially. There will be no elections till such time the virus is not completely eliminated and all citizens are safe. This is not the time to even talk about elections,” he said.
He further said that despite calls from opposition parties to reconvene Parliament, this was not necessary, as all mechanisms were already in place to combat the COVID-19 and all party leaders had been thoroughly briefed.
“There is no need to convene Parliament and gather so many people just for one sitting when it has already been discussed with all party leaders. The main thing right now is to ensure that we get rid of the virus as soon as possible so that we can kick start the economy and the safety of our citizens could be assured,” Aluthgamage said.
Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya told Daily Mirror that the Commission had not received any update on the elections from the government, however the Commission would meet next week, since it had not met prior the COVID-19 outbreak.
